activator - A method, and also the name of a tool, used by chiropractors for non-force adjustments. The tool is used to impart a tiny and rapid physical impulse to a specific area of the body. See activator technique for more information.

chiropractic - A system of therapy in which disease is considered the result of improper function of the nervous system. The method of treatment usually involves manipulation of body structures to restore proper function.

holistic medicine - An approach to medical care that emphasizes the study of all aspects of a person's health, including physical, psychological, social, economic, and cultural factors.

nervous system - The system of cells, tissues, and organs that regulates the body's responses to internal and external stimuli. In vertebrates it consists of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, ganglia, and parts of the receptor and effector organs.

sensory receptor - A nerve ending or other structure in the body, such as a photoreceptor, specialized to sense or receive stimuli. Skin receptors respond to stimuli such as touch and pressure and signal the brain by activating portions of the nervous system. Receptors in the nose detect the presence of certain chemicals, leading to the perception of odor.
