Try Different Things to Achieve Restful Sleep

In a recent New York Times article, Rethinking Sleep, writer David Randall, the author of Dreamland: Adventure in the Strange Science of Sleep, suggests Americans rethink their sleep habits. Sleep is without a doubt essential. Yet, in our modern world we are constantly bombarded by sleep-robbing devices from cell phones to fluorescent lights. History professor at Virginia Tech, Roger Eckrick, reflected on the sleep patterns of historical and literary figures and found that many characters, without the distraction of modern conveniences, would fall asleep for a little while in the evening, wake up at midnight, lie awake a while, then drift back to sleep again.

This idea of split sleep can be used for reflection, deep thinking or amorous activity. Randall postulates that using the typical 8 hour block of sleep may go against our natural patterns. Instead, getting a nap or blocking sleep time into chunks may improve our creative processes and productivity. Using strategic napping to improve performance both mentally and physically may help decrease insomnia and prevent use of a sleep aid.
